Most patients understand the importance of receiving regular visits to the dentist. That being said, dentophobia (fear of the dentist) can prevent some patients from receiving the care they need. Neglecting this care can cause serious health conditions, like tooth decay and gum disease. That’s why, for those who are nervous about being in the dental chair, Dr. Clauson offers sedation dentistry.
Sedation dentistry is a relaxing alternative for patients who feel anxious about their dental visits. It puts apprehensive patients at ease with the use of medication, alleviating their anxiety and making their visits worry-free. Here are the two methods we use:
Oral Sedation
This form of sedation works by giving the patient a pill or liquid to swallow prior to the appointment. The patient is allowed to relax in a chair as the effects take hold. After the appointment, the patient will need a ride home.
Nitrous Oxide
This form of sedation is also called “laughing gas,” and is commonly used for dental procedures. It works effectively, quickly, and wears off completely only minutes after the procedure. When using nitrous oxide, patients will need to breathe through their nose. The amount of gas can easily be adjusted by the dentist to suit the patients’ needs.
As well as helping our patients cope with anxiety, sedation dentistry can help those suffering from extreme gag reflex. This can be especially helpful for restorative and cosmetic procedures, which both require extensive work.
So, if you get nervous before visiting the dentist, make sure to call our office or schedule an appointment with Dr. Clauson. Dentophobia shouldn’t prevent you from receiving the care your mouth needs, and, thanks to the sedation methods Dr. Clauson offers, it doesn’t have to.
