Am I Allergic to the Dentist?
Ever skipped your dentist appointment and blamed it on your allergies to the dentist? In reality, there are patients who experience allergies when they visit the dentist. Many times it is the materials that the dentists use in their daily appointments. These materials include latex and other substances. It is important to voice any of these allergies before you arrive at your dentist appointment.
What is a Latex Allergy?
Latex allergies are due to a protein found in certain latex products. When someone starts to have a reaction to latex, it is because the immune system treats the product as a threat. The body will take the appropriate measures and release antibodies to fight off the threat. Chemicals like histamine are circulated into the bloodstream and result in the symptoms associated with an allergic reaction.
Evidence of a latex allergy involves:
• Itchy throat
• Itchy, red skin and/or eyes
• Rash or hives
These are minor indications of a latex allergy. Whenever a patient endures a more severe reaction, it is called anaphylaxis. If anaphylaxis occurs, seek immediate medical attention. If left untreated it could be fatal. Find emergency medical care if you experience the following conditions:
• Upset stomach and vomiting
• Low blood pressure
• Irregular pulse
